Shadowform: The Human Body’s Secret Life

This collection explores the complex relationships we have with our body. The title stems from the concept that the body is the shadow to our consciousness (the “you” that witnesses, processes, and experiences life). Our body was not something we chose, but it is always with us, acting as a tool for interacting with our environment and expressing our inner self.
The artist interviewed and worked with models to create each life-size drawing. The models were asked questions such as “what do you think the primary purpose of your body is?” and “how has your view of body changed since you were young?”. Then, the artist used movement, composition, and contrast to capture aspects of the story that the model shared.
The collection is created as a catalyst for conversation, and to find shared experience with our fellow humans. As you walk through the exhibition, take note of the thoughts and reactions that arise, and consider what your piece would look like.

ARTIST RECEPTION
Friday, August 19, 2022 from 5 - 8 pm with an artist talk at 6 pm. Current COVID guidelines will be followed. This event is free and open to the public. Participants are encouraged to register in advance using the link below.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Jessalyn Finch has been a visual artist off-and-on since 2009. She received a B.S. in Fine Art and Eastern Philosophy from UW-La Crosse focused in Printmaking and Figure Drawing. After graduation, she decided not to pursue art professionally until 2018, when she was awarded a SEMAC Emerging Artist grant for her collection “Shadow Form: The Human Body’s Secret Life,” a collection of life-size figure drawings.
During the pandemic, Finch crossed over into other mediums including sculpture, installations, and painting. She has created multi-disciplinary immersive exhibitions, wearable sculpture, community murals, and continues to experiment at her studio in Rochester, MN.
