DIVINE NATURE
by Willow Gentile
September 7 – October 24, 2021
Rochester artist Willow Gentile presents a series of paper sculptures that explore the rich processes of decomposition and regrowth through a variety of media and textures.
Artist Statement
Plants grow and wilt, leaves bud and fall… Layer by layer, an array of matter is scattered about, decomposed and rejuvenated by fungi. In my work, I abstract nature's macro/micro elements and patterns. I invest and replicate the natural growth of layered organic matter by forming, tearing, and manipulating the paper and fibers into shapes that mirror this proliferation. The abundance of chaotic growth within a confined space is the tension I revel to capture.
I am intrigued by the variety of textures that can be created with paper and natural fibers, and is experimenting with physical depth, shadow, and repetition mirroring the ecosystem of mushrooms. The materials reflect the natural colors of mushrooms and their environment: The pigments consist of diluted coffee, teas, and herbs.
