Artist Instructor: Debra DSouza
In this weekend workshop, you will learn the basics of working with Smalti—the beautiful Italian glass that has been used in mosaics for centuries. You will learn about different types of Smalti, how they are made, and how to cut them with both nippers and hammer and hardie. Instruction includes how to use thin set mortar as a setting medium and how to work from an image. We will cover basic setting styles, both ancient and modern.
Choose a holiday ornament or a design of your choice. A simple design (like shown) will help us focus on the Andamento (flow or line) that creates volume and dimension. Deb will discuss your designs with each of you individually by email prior to class. A wood frame will be provided to finish off your works of art.
Use of tools, substrates and materials are included. No art or mosaic experience is necessary. You will leave with a framed 6x6” mosaic work of art AND the basic knowledge to move forward with your new mosaic adventure.
*Material fee includes all use of tools and materials to finish your mosaic. Prepared substrate, and adhesive, assorted Italian glass (Smalti) including luminous gold Smalti will be provided.
Total of $260 payable by cash, check, or credit card must be paid prior to the beginning of class on Friday.
