ARTIST STATEMENT

My work for much of the past ten years has been about issues women face, with a particular focus on motherhood over the last few years. I have found such a well of creativity in motherhood, and becoming a mother really changed the way I think about my work. I don’t think I could be the artist I am now without having become a mom.

I have three children - Harrison (8), Margot (5), and River (newly 3). In November of 2023, we found out that my daughter has cancer. Margot has neuroblastoma and the treatment schedule for her includes chemotherapy, radiation, two bone marrow transplants and multiple rounds of immunotherapy. This body of work is still about my journey in motherhood, now with the addition of being a mother of a child with cancer. The themes from my previous motherhood work - anxiety, depression, overstimulation - are still very much present in these pieces, but are amplified with a dash of fear. There is so much that is unknown going through this process, and these pieces are me working my way through this last year of treatment, it has been some of the most terrifying and stressful parts of our journey. Margot’s two transplants were back to back, November 2024-February 2025. She almost died during the second transplant process due to her lungs bleeding and we were in the PICU for weeks. I still don’t fully know how to describe that period of time. Continuing to try and be creative during all of this has been a lifeline for me.
